Fish Tanks

August 5th, 2010

Today’s topic are fish tanks/aquariums.

The Romans were the first to have aquariums. They were made of marble but in the year 50, glass panes were used instead. The first fish kept indoors were known as sea barbels. In 1369, the Chineese Emporer had a tub built to have goldfish. Eventually the shape resembled todays goldfish bowl. In 1841, Dr. Ward created a tank to hold plants and toy fish. Later he put real fish in his tank and it worked. In 1853, the first public aquarium opened in the London Zoo. Aquariums became a fad in the 1850s in the U.K. The fad spread to Germany and evutally the U.S.

It is believedthat the first people to drink coffee were ancient Ethiopians. In the 16Th Century coffee had spread to Egypt, Turkey andnorthern Africa. Soon afterwards coffee was drunkin Italy and eventually the rest of Europe. The Dutch people were the first to massively sell coffee beans and plants. Coffee was also sold in colonies around the globe from the Americas to Indonesia.

FUN FACTS:

Coffee used to be a name for wine.

Muslim Monks used coffee as a spiritual drink.

An espresso has a third of the caffeine then a  regular cup of coffee.

Pens

August 2nd, 2010

Today’s topic is one of the most over-looked objects in the world, pens.

The first pens were used by the Indians in 500 B.C. They were made of bamboo sticks and feathers from birds. The idea quickly spread across Asia. The Romans then obtained this technology. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europeans used quills dipped  in ink. This type of pen was used to sign and write The Constitution of the United States of America.

One of the most widely used pens, the ball-point pen, was first patented on October 30tyh, 1888 by John J. Loud. The roller ball pen was invented in the early 1980s. it was improved upon in the early 1990s giving it a smoother line a better overall performance.
